Everest (The one on Queen st.)- Indian & Nepalese

I didn’t pick this place but it is well known among my friends that any place that serves Indian or Thai is one that I will go to with pleasure!

Me and my boyfriend arrived late so were rushed to order, this would usually be an issue as I’m reallly indecisive but as they had butter chicken it wasn’t really an issue…I have time for adventure when I’m able to carefully scrutinize EVERY dish on the menu! He ordered chili chicken, I believe. Now Everest isn’t what you would call authentic. They had pizza on the menu. And a pasta section I think…I skipped that part (sorry Italians!). It’s DEFINITELY westernized tasting…my butter chicken was SUPER creamy and mild…quite nondescript. The exact sort of thing you would find in every pub around the UK (did you know that there are now more Indian restaurants in UK than chippies?!). The chili chicken was too spicy for me and again the flavour wasn’t all that interesting. What you could get at any Chinese delivery in any Canadian city. I did LOVE my drink, a raspberry belini…it was extremely YUMMY! Oh and apparently the pizza doesn’t have enough sauce…

They have some cool dishes that aren’t that common like Nepalese momo’s (dumplings) but my friend got them and they didn’t look any different than Chinese dumplings and it didn’t look like it would satiate me!!

I would recomend this place for those who like the idea of eating Asian food but aren’t quite ready for the full blown taste explosion!!

Salad King… The Journey Continues

HOMNOMNOMNOM

After spending more time than I care to admit scrolling through online forums and reviews on thai restaurants (I really should be spending my time more constructively :S) I was anxious to EAT MORE!!

At first I thought I had the energy to venture to Sukhothai but because it’s not quite in the down town core I didn’t…laziness is unacceptable I know, I know. Buuuut on the positive side Salad King is right next to Young- Dundas Square which is kind off the heart of the city in my opinion AND it’s super cheap.

I went there with a friend after work and as I had done my research I’d read about a dish called Islamic noodles which was basically pad thai with a curry sauce on it. Feeling verrrry legit and hip I ordered that off the menu and my friend ordered the green curry. It came SUPER fast. Like really, really quick. Ninja fast.

It was nice….but nothing special. Kinda makes me wonder how it’s rated top in the city?? Did I just order the wrong things??

I want to try it again (under 10 bucks, you can’t really go wrong) and try the regular pad thai because I think that might give me a better indication. I asked for my islamic noodles and they were not at all spicy, the curry they were covered with overwhelmed the flavour of the noodles so all you could taste was coconut milk. There weren’t layers to the falvour, quite simple. The green curry wasn’t particularly flavourful, although there were some nice fresh veggies in it. I liked the communal seating and the decor was cute and modern, but again nothing particularly special.

I think there are DEF better places to go in da T.

Don’t regret going though…

One can never have too much pad thai ;)

Thai Food- Khao San Road

Khao San Road – The name is based upon a street in Bangkok

Khao San Road has recently opened up and is run/ has the same chef as the extremely popular Sukhothai (I’ve never been!), which always seems to make the “best Thai in Toronto” lists, is famed for its authenticity and for the fact that it doesn’t smother its food with ketchup. KSR is supposed to have extremely similar dishes (they do have the same chef!), but with a slightly more upscale atmosphere, location…and price.

When I visited with a friend I was unaware of its fame, just excited to try a new Thai place that was supposedly extremely good. I ordered the pad thai (as always), although there are two different versions to choose from, I chose the street style. It was good, ALL of Toronto wasn’t wrong about that…however it wasn’t what I was expecting (my friend ordered the other version, also good, also different). To be honest I like pad thai’s that are sweet, (I am a huge ketchup fan, probably explains this) and its what I’ve come to expect in the dish. To me this version (closer the authentic Thai food) didn’t taste like the dish I know. I would definitely recommend people try this, but make sure you know what to expect! I now wish that I’d tried a curry as they are supposedly sublime…
Make sure you realize that there is usually a line and that its not cheap, $15 for a pad thai.

I’m looking forward to trying Sukhothai!

Asian Food in Toronto! An Introduction…

I am not a food critic…I just like to eat. A LOT. Asian food…while probably too broad a categorization to realistically eat enough to give a well-rounded perspective, (neither my wallet or waist could handle that!) encompasses almost all of my favourite foods!

Just think of all the yummy food... I couldn’t handle depriving myself of any…could you?! Toronto prides itself on being one of the most multicultural cities in the world and the sheer volume of options isa testament to that. I’m going to try my hardest to sample a diverse range of ‘culinary delights’ from all over Asia, but I can’t make any promises…I have biases, there is likely a great deal on the virtues of different pad thai and butter chicken, both popular dishes for a reason! If you happen upon this and have any suggestions, feel free! I am always hungry…for new ideas ;)
